What the check shows

What we compare

The mileage check uses the readings DVSA records at each MOT, and the mileage on the car’s advert when it’s for sale at a dealer we follow.

Mileage at each MOT

The reading from each MOT test on a chart, oldest first, then the advert’s mileage when the car is for sale.

Free

Readings that go down

If an MOT recorded fewer miles than an earlier one, we say so. It can be a typing mistake at the test or a replaced instrument panel, so ask the seller.

Free

The advert against the MOT

When the advert gives fewer miles than an earlier MOT recorded, we flag it and say what to ask.

Free

Cars that hardly moved

When the advert’s mileage is about the same as an MOT reading from over a year ago, the car seems to have been off the road. We say what to check.

Free

Mileage on older adverts

The car’s History shows its older adverts from other sites, with the mileage each one gave.

Questions

Is the mileage check free?
Yes. It’s on the car’s page as soon as you look it up. It needs MOT readings to check against, so a car too new for an MOT has none yet.
Can you tell me if a car has been clocked?
Records alone can’t prove it. We show where the recorded mileages don’t add up and what to ask. A reading that goes down can be a typing mistake at the test or a replaced instrument panel.
Where do the readings come from?
The MOT readings are DVSA’s. The advert mileage is what the dealer’s advert says. Older adverts from other sites come with the car’s History (£3.99).
What if the car isn’t for sale?
We still check its MOT readings against each other. Checking the advert against them needs a current advert at a dealer we follow.
What does the History add?
The car’s older adverts from other sites, with the prices, dates and mileage they gave. It costs £3.99, and what you pay counts towards the full report.
