What the check shows

The car’s MOT record, test by test

MOT history comes from DVSA, the agency that runs the MOT. It’s free to look up, with or without an account.

Pass, fail and expiry

Each test’s date and result, and when the current MOT runs out, or when a newer car’s first one is due.

Free

Failures and advisories

What the tester noted at each test, from advisories to major and dangerous defects, in plain words.

Free

Mileage at each test

The mileage recorded at each test, checked against the advert when the car is for sale at a dealer we follow.

Free

Gaps in the record

Times the car went without a valid MOT after its first one was due, and for how long.

Free

Tax and MOT status from DVLA

Whether it’s taxed or declared off the road (SORN), its CO2, colour and when its latest V5C logbook was issued, where DVLA has a record.

Free

Finance and write-off checks

The MOT record doesn’t show finance or insurance write-offs. The full report checks both, with data provided by Experian.

Questions

Is the MOT history check free?
Yes. Look up a registration and the car’s MOT history is on its page, free. Without an account you can look up 5 cars a day; a free account has no daily limit.
Where does the MOT history come from?
From DVSA, which keeps the record of MOT tests in Great Britain. We show the tests, results, defects and mileages as DVSA holds them.
What’s an advisory?
Something the tester noticed that didn’t fail the test but may need work soon, such as tyres or brakes wearing. The same advisory test after test is worth asking about.
Why does a newer car have no MOT history?
In Great Britain a car needs its first MOT at three years old. Until then we show when its first one is due.
Does the MOT history show write-offs or finance?
No. Those are in the full report (£11.99), with finance, write-off, stolen and salvage auction checks, data provided by Experian. See the write-off check.
Can I check a car that isn’t for sale?
Yes. You can look up a registration DVSA has an MOT record for, whether or not the car is for sale.
